Oscar nominee Tems has been slammed on social media after her elaborate outfit blocked the view of fellow attendees at Sunday night’s 95th Annual Academy Awards
The songstress — who is nominated for Best Original Song for the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” track “Lift Me Up” — wore a puffy white gown that wrapped around the back of her head.
And while she stunned on the red carpet, the incredible outfit was probably less loved by those sitting inside the Dolby Theater.
Photos of the “Crazy Tings” hitmaker standing out in the crowd quickly went viral on Twitter, clocking up hundreds of thousands of views.
“Imagine waiting your whole life to be at the Oscars and you end up sitting behind a stratus cloud,” one sniped, comparing the garment to a mass of condensed water vapor.
The critic accompanied their snarky tweet with a screenshot that showed a guest craning his neck around Tems’ puffy garment in order to see the stage.
Tems’ Oscars 2023 Extravagant Look
The Nigerian musician and producer Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, debuted one of the night’s more extravagant looks: a voluminous gown from the LA-based label Lever Couture. The dress featured a sculptural flourish of pleated and boned fabric strips that curved up through the bodice and around the head, seemingly frozen in space, and a skirt so full that it spilled over into the surrounding seats.
The bridal-style design was widely labeled as ethereal and angelic; it ranked highly on many social media users’ best-dressed lists, But others, however, took some issue with its scale.
Tems responds to view-blocking Oscars 2023 dress
Tems faced backlash for wearing a dramatic white Lever Couture dress that blocked the view of the audience members seated behind her during the awards ceremony.
And on Monday, the 27-year-old Grammy winner shared her playful response to the drama.
“Uh Ohh!” Tems captioned a series of Instagram photos of herself wearing the couture creation from the Ukrainian label, which featured a structured veil that wrapped around her shoulders and formed a sculptural halo above her head.
She also tweeted photos modeling the over-the-top ensemble, writing, “Oops.”
